In the European Union, it is estimated that the construction sector is the largest consumer of energy. More specifically, 40% of total energy consumption in the EU is used by the construction sector and 36% of all EU greenhouse gas emissions originate from buildings (European Commission, European Climate Pact, Priority topics, Green buildings).
The urbanization observed for decades, has created significant changes in the composition of the atmosphere and soil, resulting in the change of the microclimate and the increase of the temperature in urban areas. The impact of this phenomenon (Urban Heat Island) is intense and continues to grow due to the increase in the average temperature of the planet caused by the climate change.
A realistic and sustainable solution for addressing the energy problem and the pollution of the environment, is twofold; On the one hand the use of mild-renewable forms of energy and on the other promote the rational use of effective building techniques, making use of materials with low environmental impact.
To serve this scope, as early as 1993, the US “Green Building Council” (USGBC) (Novamixis a member) was formed and developed a building evaluation system called Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).
