Substrate preparation:

The substrate must be compact, clean, and free of grease, oil, laitance, and other substances that could interfere with NOVACOL RAPID adhesion. The tensile strength of the substrate must be at least 1.5 N/mm². Existing ceramic, Gres porcelain tiles, marble, and stone floor and/or wall coverings must be firmly attached to the substrate and free of surface laitance that could compromise adhesion. If necessary, use an appropriate detergent, such as ALCALINE CLEANER, ACID CLEAN or ACID CLEAN TURBO to clean the coverings, and thoroughly rinse with water. Before applying tiles, a primer coat of PLANO CONTACT FAST should be applied.

Preparation of the mix:

Mix the contents of the 25kg paper bag containing NOVACOL RAPID (25 kg) for at least 3-5 minutes on low speed with an appropriate electric stirrer, until a uniform mortar free of lumps is obtained. It is recommended to avoid exposing the materials (in powder or liquid form) to direct sunlight before use during hot periods and in general, as this reduces working time.

Application:

To ensure complete contact between the tiles and the adhesive, the tiles are placed with firm pressure on the still-fresh adhesive bed. The open time of NOVACOL RAPID in normal temperature and humidity conditions is 20 minutes. Unfavorable weather conditions, such as direct sunlight, drying and/or hot wind, or a very absorbent substrate, can reduce the open time significantly. As a result, determining whether the adhesive has formed a superficial skin is critical. Remove the adhesive from the substrate and reapply it before installing the tiles if this occurs. Small adjustments must be made 10 minutes after the tile is installed.

Grouting:

Grouting can be completed between 1-4 hours after the tile has been installed. For large-sized tiles, the wait time may be extended. NOVAGROUT F is recommended for grouting joints as wide as 10mm. For rectified tiles or when a very smooth grout surface is required, NOVACOLOR GLASS can be used. NOVAGROUT G is intended for joints with widths ranging from 5 to 20mm. The epoxy grout NOVAGROUT EPOXY is recommended for areas where chemical resistance is required, such as swimming pools or industrial floors. For more information, consult the Technical Data Sheets for the relevant products.

Recommendations:

Avoid using NOVACOL RAPID:

  • In cases where the substrate and environment temperature is less than +5°C or higher than +35°C
  • In a thickness higher than 10mm
  • On substrates like metal, wood or surfaces like polyurethane, acrylic and similar paint or coatings (use NOVACOL 2K ELASTIC)
  • On PVC, asphalt membranes and in general materials which polymerize in the long run
  • On friable or not properly cured substrates
  • Over existing expansion joints
  • On non-absorbent substrates without a suitable primer
  • Under direct sunlight and/or strong wind

Also note the following:

  • Never exceed the maximum recommended quantity of mixing water
  • Protect the tiled surface from rain and frost for the first 24 hours
  • For tiles of total surface over 900 cm² the double-spreading (buttering) technique of adhesive is always recommended
  • Do not add cement, lime, gypsum or other binders or substances which may affect the mortar characteristics
  • Application should be performed by professional skilled workers

Cleaning:

Tools, buckets, tiles etc. can be cleaned with fresh and clean water as long as, NOVACOL RAPID is still fresh. After hardening occurs, cleaning can take place by mechanical means.
